Chair's opening remarks

Benet Northcote has worked on sustainability for businesses, governments and NGOs since 2000, particularly on strategy and communications. Today he is the Chairman of Dialogue Earth and the Conservative Environment Network, as well as a Trustee of Green Alliance and the UK Centre for Ecology and Hydrology.

He started his career as a BBC journalist before moving to various corporate communications roles, where his clients included FTSE 100 firms, top consumer brands, NGOs, and governments. He was chief policy advisor to Greenpeace UK, where he led engagement with politicians and businesses on campaigns ranging from coal to food and transport. After that, he spent five years as deputy private secretary to the king, when he was Prince of Wales, leading on responsible business, the natural environment, food and farming.

Until 2020, he was director of sustainability for the John Lewis Partnership. For seven years, he delivered major change to embed best-practice sustainability programmes at Waitrose and John Lewis, coinciding with a period of growth across both brands. Today, professionally, he continues to advise businesses on environmental and social engagement strategies.

Since mid-2023 Rachel has been Executive Director at the Aldersgate Group, a cross-sectoral alliance of businesses and other organisations championing a prosperous, environmentally sustainable economy. Rachel has 22 years’ experience of working in environment and climate policy, as a civil servant (including as policy lead on the Climate Change Act) and in the private and third sectors. Drawing on this experience, she works with Aldersgate Group members to develop robust recommendations and press the Government for change in vital areas across climate and environment policy.

Closing keynote panel – Halfway to 2050: Bold conversations on Net Zero progress
Andrea Vena brings over 30 years of expertise in the space sector, spanning both industry and institutional roles. With a degree in Electronic Engineering and a Master in Telecommunication Systems, he began his career at Alenia Spazio, now Leonardo.
Since joining ESA in 2000, Andrea has held strategic leadership roles, including Head of the Corporate Strategic Planning Office (2006) and Head of the Corporate Development Office (2016), where he drove the organization’s strategic evolution.
Under his leadership, ESA launched transformative initiatives in strategic planning, corporate risk management and knowledge management, that set industry benchmarks.
Appointed Chief Climate and Sustainability Officer in 2021, Andrea leads ESA’s Green Agenda, aligning the agency’s activities with the Paris Agreement and the European Green Deal, fostering sustainability practices across the space sector.

He previously worked as Director of Environment & Sustainability at Jacobs, a professional services firm. Prior to that he held senior environment and sustainability roles, including at Sydney Trains, Eurostar and Network Rail.

Gemma has expertise in helping corporate leadership teams to develop transformational sustainability strategies and establish the governance practices needed to successfully deliver their strategies and visions. Since joining Forum, she has worked on projects with Bupa, Reckitt, Royal Enfield, The Crowne Estate, Glanbia, Bord Bia, Dole, Wates, Kingfisher and a global top five supermarket chain. Gemma has also led practical thought leadership pieces, such as the second iteration of the Business Transformation Compass in partnership with the Bentley Environmental Foundation, and the Visionary Leadership modules of two of Forum’s Climate & Health toolkits. Gemma’s background spans 15 years in industry and NGO roles in corporate sustainability and evidence-based policy. Lisa Hawkes is Global Sustainability Senior Manager at Unilever. In 2015, she helped create TRANSFORM, an impact accelerator led by Unilever, the UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office, and EY, that supports visionary enterprises across Africa, Asia and beyond. She now leads TRANSFORM’s work around livelihoods, as well as partnering with local teams on TRANSFORM’s work in Africa. Lisa has worked for Unilever for over a decade in various sustainability roles across research and development, supply chain and within the Global Sustainability Function.
